Vitality Supreme by Bernarr MacFadden may have been his best book (and he wrote many). It is one of his most well-known. Many of his other books go into one specific area of health, for instance the eyes, or nerves, but this is an all around health book. So anyone looking to see what Bernarr MacFadden is all about would be wise to start here.

Let me tell you a little bit about Bernarr MacFadden. He was called the Father of Physical Culture, for the huge influence he had on it. At the same time he was quite extreme. While in certain cases he may have gone overboard (like pushing his family to follow all his ideals, to the point where they all hated him for it) he also was a pioneer and had many great ideas. I've got to say I love this book. It has 4 stars rather than 5 because the style is very old and you can't take all the advice without a grain of salt. Yet in every part there is fitness wisdom, some of which is just being rediscovered.

The author was the famous publisher Bernarr MacFadden. Although he ultimately published a bunch of magazines like Confidential and True Crime, his start was in "physical culture." That was the old term for bodybuilding and fitness. And, he practiced what he preached.

He was famous in the beginning of the 20th century for his health ideas, eccentricities, political views, and a host of virtues and foibles. This book summarizes his beliefs and "discoveries" which came from self-experimentation and experience. His influence was great. For instance, one of his disciples was Paul Bragg, a famous health guru. Bragg, in turn, inspired the late Jack Lalanne who influenced a great number of bodybuilders and fitness buffs through the 50s and 60s -- a trend which continues today. Perhaps you have one of LaLanne's juicers.

So, this book is not just of historical interest. It has tons of advice on everything from eating and posture to diet and sleeping, and even (gasp) sex. A reader should check out the information before totally applying it, yet can't help but be inspired by the author's own earnestness and vitality. If you are a serious, scientifically oriented fitness buff you should probably spend your time reading something else. But, if you are looking for new hints of things to try, or are interested in the foundations of the fitness movement, then this book is for you.

I'm glad to see this book by the "father of physical culture" back in print. It is truly a classic and by far the best and most useful of Macfadden's numerous books. This book mainly covers exercises for developing vitality (physical well-being and energy), but also has some good information about diet, correct breathing, fresh air, preserving the teeth, curing constipation, blood purifucation, bathing, clothing, sleep, etc. It covers a wide range of health subjects. Bernarr Macfadden (1868-1955), America's first "health guru" was definitely ahead of his time. This book presents many of his theories in a clear and readable format. The style of writing is definitely dated, but his message is clear. The photographs are numerous and excellent.
Good informative book. You can't go wrong if you are interested in becoming or staying healthy. I did not find the information outdated.
In my late seventies, I find this is a gold mine of excellent tips on staying healthy and strong -- diet, exercise, digestion, breathing. Unfortunately, Macfadden had a distain for physicians' advice. That aside, he is helpful. One problem with the small is that the exercise illustrations do not show well.

Also helpful is a book by Macfadden's wife Dumbbells and carrot strips; The story of Bernarr Macfadden, Macfadden went to England, promoted a contest to find England's one physically perfect woman, then promptly courted and married the winner.
THIS IS CONSIDERED THE BEST BOOK BY BERNARR MCFADDEN "THE FATHER OF PHYSICAL CULTURE" IN AMERICA. A VERY INTERESTING MAN AND A VERY INTERESTING BOOK ON EXERCISE, THE PROPER DIET, MAINTAINING PROPER POSTURE, CURING CONSTIPATION AND MANY OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS. SOME MATERIAL MAY BE CONSIDERED OUTDATED BUT IT HAS LOTS OF GREAT KNOWLEDGE AND TIPS ON STAYING HEALTHY AND HOW TO BECOME HEALTHY IF YOU`RE SICK. ALSO, HOW GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP AND BREATHING PROPERLY CAN MAKE MANY HEALTH PROBLEMS GO AWAY OR AT LEAST GREATLY IMPROVE THEM. MANY THINGS THAT BERNARR DISCUSSES ARE JUST NOW BEING RE-DISCOVERED AND HAVE BEEN PROVEN TO BE MORE EFFECTIVE THAN MODERN METHODS. EVEN THE GREATEST HEALTH/FITNESS ICON OF ALL TIME CHARLES ATLAS WAS A STUDENT OF THIS MAN. CHARLES TOOK MANY OF THE TECHNIQUES OF BERNARR AND IMPROVED THEM AND CREATED THE BEST BODYBUILDING/FITNESS COURSE EVER, WHICH I ALSO HIGHLY RECOMMEND. OVERALL, A VERY INTERESTING READ ALTHOUGH SOME THINGS SHOULD BE TAKEN WITH A GRAIN OF SALT. OVERALL, A MUST HAVE BOOK IF YOU`RE INTERESTED IN THIS SUBJECT.
